International star Tom Rob Smith to visit New Zealand

Later this month award-winning UK-based writer Tom Rob Smith (CHILD 44) will visit New Zealand to promote his second thriller, THE SECRET SPEECH. Smith's debut, a serial killer thriller set in Stalinist Russia, was a supernova success - garnering a bidding war for the publishing rights, selling more than 1 million copies, being translated into more than 30 languages, winning the 2008 CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger for thriller writing, and being nominated or longlisted for both the Man Booker Prize and the Costa First Novel Award (formerly the Whitbread).

Tom Rob Smith will be in Auckland from 26-28 August, and appearing at 6pm at the Takapuna Library on Thursday 27 August 2009. More information can be found here

One of the things I will be trying to do with this blog is keep readers updated with such visits by international crime and thriller writing heavyweights. Although New Zealand is a long way from many of the major markets, a pleasantly surprising amount of great authors do choose to visit - although sometimes such visits aren't necessarily publicised widely. In the past few weeks alone, we have had top internationals like Linwood Barclay (NO TIME FOR GOODBYE, FEAR THE WORST), Scott Frost (NEVER FEAR, POINT OF NO RETURN), Stuart MacBride (DS Logan McRae series) and Michael Stanley (Detective Kubu books) visit our shores.

Keep visiting this blog, and I'll try to keep everyone updated on such visits - that sometimes fall through the mainstream media cracks.

  1. Great job, Craig. Blog looks great - and it's great somebody is keeping us updated on when these great authors are showing up... You're gonna be a real advocate for crime fiction in this country.
