Updated: New Zealand Crime Bibliography

New year, new start, as they say. It's been a while since I've updated the bibliography of New Zealand crime writers and crime novels here on Crime Watch. I first put together a much-longer-than-expected list back in 2010, based on research I'd done and many hours combing through secondhand bookstores and online and other resources.

(See the 'Kiwi Authors' tab above).

New Zealand has a far richer, deeper, and more diverse crime writing history than most people - even well-informed people within the literary community - realise. There are now more than 150 local crime writers on my list, who've published several hundred crime, mystery, and thriller novels between them. Many are out-of-print and hard-to-find, of course, but there is still a wide array of intriguing crime novels written by New Zealanders, available in print and online.

Today I've added a further 20 authors and 51 novels to the list, ranging from 'forgotten fiction' from 1956 (found in the Arty Bees Bookstore in Wellington), to ebooks and print novels published in 2014. The photo above is from 2010, with about 120-130 of the books in the photo (I had another 30-40 others elsewhere, and have collected many more since).

You can check out the new bibliography here.

I'll continue to work on this resource in future, adding publication dates and links to author pages and further information about the books listed (as well as adding any further writers and novels as they arise).

I'd really appreciate any feedback you have - or if you know of any books I've overlooked, please do let me know in the comments section. Cheers!

  1. Great resource Craig. You might want to check out how the list appears on different browsers though - it's not rendering properly for me on IE (looks fine on Chrome). On IE each line looks like this instead of the dot points

    1. Thanks for letting me know Bernadette. That's annoying - technology eh? I use Chrome, not IE, so hadn't noticed. I'm overhauling the look of Crime Watch in future, so will check out the compatability stuff at the same time. Cheers! :)

  3. Hi Craig,
You might want to check out Frances Keinzley. Her first novel - TANGAHANO - published 1960 by now defunct Peter Davies (London) was an award winning non-crime first book. An excerpt was included in A BOOK OF NEW ZEALAND (revised edition 1979,) edited by JC Reid and Peter Cape, published by Collins.
In 1970, Stein and Day (US) published two crime novels by her: A TIME TO PREY (SBN 8128-1270-0) then ILLUSION (SBN 8128-1312-X) both of which were translated into several languages in Europe - Germany and the Scandinavian countries in particular. I remember being thrilled as a young au pair in Germany seeing my mother's books in the bookshops. She was a shy and withdrawn woman who continued to write - later publishing THE TOYMAKER and THE HOUSE OF HOGS but I don't have those details, my sister has them.
I left NZ permanently in 1973 and lost track of her writings. Poor health and Alzheimers took their toll.
    Regards
    Shannon
