CITY OF FEAR by Alafair Burke (2009)
Reviewed by Craig Sisterson
City of Fear (released as Angel’s Tip in the US) is Alafair Burke’s fifth novel, and the second to feature NYPD detective Ellie Hatcher.
The all-too-realistic case of a young woman found stabbed to death after an alcohol and drug-fuelled night in a NYC hotspot later becomes much more complicated when Hatcher uncovers echoes with three largely-forgotten cold cases.
The problem is the police, including Hatcher, had quickly zeroed in on a cocky young hedge fund manager as Chelsea Hart’s killer – and they’d built a solid case with the DA’s office. As Hatcher investigates, everything begins to unravel.
Burke pens a suspenseful tale that bursts into action in the final third. City of Fear is an enjoyable read and a solid addition to any crime-lovers bookshelf from a promising author with a fantastic pedigree, who seems to be getting better and better.
