The Ngaio Marsh Awards, in association with the New Zealand Book Council, Kāpiti Coast District Libraries and the Friends of the Library, invites booklovers to an event featuring three talented local writers.
2017 Ngaio Marsh Awards entrants Penelope Haines and Christopher Abbey are joined by David McGill to discuss where their writing inspiration comes from, how they create interesting characters, craft page-turning storylines, and infuse their tales with real-life issues

Christopher Abbey was born in South Africa but has lived in Palmerston North for almost forty years. A retired quantity surveyor, his debut novel A MOMENT OF SILENCE was written and revised over many years, and has been described by reviewers as “gritty, well-crafted” and “uncompromising in its description of human weaknesses” (Stuff.co.nz)
Penelope Haines grew up in India and Pakistan but now calls Otaki home. Before being a writer she was a nurse, farm manager, CEO, and commercial pilot. Her third novel DEATH ON D’URVILLE is the first instalment in a mystery series featuring Paraparaumu pilot Claire Hardcastle, and has been praised as “just plain fun” with a “smart and sassy” new heroine.
David McGill writes social histories of New Zealand, in recent times mixing real historical figures with crime stories. He has published more than fifty books, and has just released THE PLOT TO KILL PETER FRASER, his second spy story featuring Detective Dan Delaney. Set in late 1940s New Zealand, it “unfolds with twists, turns and lots of action”.
