Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher?

I'm not entirely sure what to say. I haven't read all of Child's books, but - apart from the obvious height/presence questions - I'm not sure if I really get the Reacher 'feel' from the way Cruise - who has put in some excellent performances and great films - talks and what he says etc in this trailer.

I'd love to know what you think. Please share your thoughts.

  1. I've read most of Child's books and I'm not sure that Cruise could be any farther from the character Child wrote. And, based on the preview, this doesn't look much like a Reacher story. I'm going to give it a miss.

  2. Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher? Think I'll sit this one out.

  3. It may not be completely true to the Reacher idea, but I expect it will be pacy and clever with great special effects and good camera work to make Cruise appear taller and bigger - and I am easily caught up in all the car chases and big bangs so I probably will go to check it out.

  4. I will go to check it out too, and to make loud scornful noises when Tom Cruise fails to live up to the required stature of Jack Reacher. (That's the fun part of going to a movie and sharing audience reaction!) Reacher has been portrayed vividly in every book as being a BIG, powerful man. Hell, he was named for being tall when Lee Child's wife wanted a 'reacher' to get something from the top shelf in the supermarket. Tom would have to run off to get one of those plastic boxes to stand on! Reacher's whole point is his size and strength. Tom Cruise's thing is being small, pretty and charming. For heaven's sake, Nadzeya Ostapchuk would have been more accurate casting than Tom Cruise! I assume that money talked and that Tom levered his way into the role. Sad.

  5. It amazes me all the negative comments about Cruise playing Reacher. To my mind Lee Child has invented a character that no actor could faithfully play. I noticed in the clip that they havent made Cruise look huge as I thought they might do with the old movie magic. But it is the movies and no matter who played Reacher it would not be how the readers imagined him to be. So I say go see the movie first then say your piece. I mean where in the Lincoln Rhyme novels does it say he is black? But in the movie he is....so go figure.

  6. I'm with Jeannie, I will give it a try. The trailer is enticing and if the
story is good, it may work. It's not how I visualize Reacher, but Tom does
    have that bit of toughness.

  7. Like the author, height's not an issue for me, neither is Tom Cruise. He'll do well. Look forward to seeing it.
